NALSA Files PIL for Humanitarian Release of Aged and Sick Inmates from Indian Jails MAHI SINHA 06 Apr 2025 In order to secure the immediate release of elderly and terminally sick convicted inmates nationwide, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) lodged a Public Interest Litigation to the Supreme Court. In accordance with democratic and human rights requirements, the petition emphasizes the appalling conditions that these inmates endure and demands that the listed inmates be released with mercy. The petition highlights the concerning increase in the number of elderly and disabled inmates who are lingering in jails, frequently without access to proper medical care or respectable living arrangements. It contends that the extended detention of such people is a violation of both international human rights standards acknowledged by the UN and their fundamental rights as protected by Articles 14 and 21 of the Indian Constitution.
